Die Invariantentheorie der linearen Transformationen hat sich seit den Entdeckungen des Herrn Gordan in der Richtung entwickelt, dass die Frage nach einem endlichen Formensystem gegebener Grund formen immer mehr in den Mittelpunkt des Interesses getreten ist. Die Vereinigung vieler Kräfte auf diesen einen Punkt hat ihre guten Früchte getragen; insbesondere haben in jüngster Zeit die Unter suchungen des Herrn Hilbert neue Wege eröffnet und die endgiltige Antwort auf eine ganze Reihe bisher ofl'ener Fragen gebracht.
