Excerpt from Introduction to a Devout Life
That the whole might be more profitable and agree able, I have revised and connected the different parts, adding several advices and instructions which appeared suited to my Intention. Numberless occupations left me little leisure for the accomplishment of my design hence you will find in this treatise neither order nor method, but merely a collection of good admonitions which I have delivered in plain and intelligible words. Without bestowing so much as a thought on the orna ments of language, having business of more couse' quence to attend to.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book, written in the seventeenth century, offers a comprehensive guide to living a devout life. The author, a renowned figure in his time, provides a practical approach to cultivating a deeper spiritual connection, especially for those who live in the midst of secular life. He challenges the notion that devotion is solely for those who have retired from the world, demonstrating that a devout life is possible and indeed enriching for those engaged in family life, business, or even courtly affairs. The author emphasizes the importance of careful self-reflection and purification from sin, both mortal and venial, as essential first steps towards achieving spiritual growth. He then introduces a series of meditations designed to guide the reader through a process of detachment from worldly affections and a gradual ascent towards a more profound love for God. This journey includes contemplating God's creation, the purpose of human existence, the benefits of divine love, and the consequences of sin. The book presents a profound exploration of devotion as a life-long process, a path marked by both challenges and rewards, ultimately leading to a more complete and fulfilling life.
