Ich möchte also eine gewisse Wahrscheinlich keit nicht bestreiten, daß in den geschilderten Vor stellungen ein noch ursprünglicherer Grundgedanke der Sitte der Totenbeigaben enthalten sei, als er in der Absicht liegt, mit ihnen den Verstorbenen fiir ein jenseitiges Leben auszurüsten. Gleichwohl bezweifele ich nicht, daß schon in einer sehr frühen Zeit, vielleicht schon in der Epoche des vor historischen Zusammenhangs der indogermanischen Völker, der Wunsch der Fürsorge für das Wohl eines Verstorbenen in einer künftigen Welt die Herrschaft über andere, daneben oder zuvor liegende Vor stellungen errungen habe. Der direkte Beweis für die Richtigkeit dieser Anschauung würde sich führen lassen, wenn es gelänge, zu zeigen, daß man schon in vorhistorischer Zeit nicht nur darauf bedacht war, den Toten mit solchen Dingen zu ver sehen, die, wie seine Axt, sein Schwert, Schmuck, Hund, Weib dereinst sein Eigentum gewesen waren oder gewesen sein konnten, sondern daß man noch darüber hinaus für sein Wohl im Jenseits besorgt war.
