Synopsis

This book, initially published in 1764, is the first volume of a work published by the Scottish philosopher Thomas Reid. Reid is critical of the then dominant philosophical tradition known as the theory of ideas. This theory states that all of our knowledge of the world comes through ideas in our minds that correspond to objects outside of us. Reid argues this theory is flawed because it can't explain how we can have knowledge of physical objects that are separate from our minds. He instead posits the theory of "common sense," which posits that we have direct knowledge of external objects and that our beliefs about the world are based on this direct knowledge. This book has had a profound impact on philosophy throughout history.
