Il y existe certainement, au moyen âge, des formes de musique instrumentale distinctes des formes popu laires proprement dites; on le suppose du moins, non sans vraisemblance, en se basant sur certains documents iconographiques 1 mais de ces formes mêmes on ne sait absolument rien. Et si l'on veut connaître l'origine de tout ce qui est distinctif dans l'art des compositeurs russes modernes, c'est la musique liturgique profondé ment assimilée, c'est surtout la musique populaire où le génie de la race avaittrouvé son expression intégrale et spontanée, qu'il faut étudier tout d'abord.
