Synopsis

Excerpt from The Blessed Damozel

Then came, in 1850, the short-lived organ of that enthusiastic few, The Germ, which lasted through four numbers, and in this transitory expression of pre-raphaelite aims, creed and conscience the Damozel, with several other of Rossetti' 3 poems, first held converse with the world.

The Germ was really an official manifesto or apologia of pre-raphaelitism all that it had to preach was the noble doctrine of the sacredness, the saving grace, of conscience in art.

First published in 1850, they introduced the Pre-Raphaelite art movement, a captivating school of thought that sought to capture the spiritual and moral power of art through a return to the pure, unadulterated style and iconography of the Italian Renaissance. Rossetti's poems take the form of vivid and evocative sonnets, laden with intricate imagery and a profound exploration of the human condition. Themes of love, longing, spirituality, and the ephemeral nature of existence are interwoven throughout, creating a testament to the boundless possibilities of the imagination and the enduring power of the human spirit. Ultimately, this book is a celebration of the enduring power of art, offering an insightful glimpse into the birth of the Pre-Raphaelite movement and providing profound commentary on the essential role of beauty and imagination in shaping our understanding of the world.
