Her attempt to anoint his body with oils and spices is thwarted when she discovers the tomb empty. Two angels inform her that he has risen, but she does not recognize Jesus when he appears before her, mistaking him for the gardener. Through Mary's journey, the author explores themes of love, loss, and faith, examining the complex emotions of a devoted follower who struggles to come to terms with the death and resurrection of her Lord.
