Religion wie Volksglaube äussern sich entweder durch das Wort oder durch Handlung. Die Äusserung des Glaubens durch das Wort ist M ythos, die Lehre davon die M ythologie, die Äusserung durch die Handlung ergiebt den Kultus. Wir haben es demnach auf der einen Seite mit einem volkstflmlichen oder niederen Mythos und mit einem volkstümlichen Kult oder abergläubischen Brauch, auf der anderen mit einem religiösen oder höheren Mythos und mit einem religiösen Kulte zu thun. Da beide in gegenseitiger Beziehung zu einander stehen, lässt es sich bei der Dürftigkeit unserer Quellen aus alter Zeit oft schwer entscheiden, was dem Volksglauben, was der Religion der Germanen angehört. Beide sind daher unter allen Umständen in gleicher Weise darzustellen.
