Synopsis
This book presents a series of essays that explore the connection between the early English and German drama. The author argues that a company of English actors toured Germany around the year 1600, performing German translations of English plays. As evidence, the author points to a collection of German plays published in 1620 that includes eight old English dramatic pieces, translated into very common German prose. The author also argues that two other early English plays furnished Shakespeare with the groundwork of two of his most striking compositions. This book is an important contribution to the study of the early English and German drama and will be of interest to scholars and students of both literatures.

Book Description
These three essays by the antiquary William Thoms (1803-85) were published together in 1865. 'Shakespeare in Germany' discusses how English playwrights and actors influenced German drama. 'The Folk-Lore of Shakespeare' considers fairy lore and character names. In 'Was Shakespeare Ever a Soldier?', Thoms is 'morally certain' that he was.
