Il est toutefois avéré que la France en possédait devant Puy Guillaume, en 1338 Villaret prétend en outre qu'il en existait déjà à Amberg (haut Palatinat) dès l'année 1301 ainsi, le premier usage de ces machines de guerre mo dernes daterait du commencement du quatorzième siècle. Dans l'origine les bouches à feu eurent à peu près la forme que l'on donne aujourd'hui aux mortiers. Elles furent sans doute composées d'abord de tubes en bois cerclés en fer. Ensuite on les construisit au moyen de barres de fer brasées dans le sens de leur longueur et ren forcées par des cercles de mème métal: mais ces der nières bouches à feu étant très - sujettes à se fendre on fut conduit à les fabriquer avec de la tonte en employant successivement le fer et le bronze.
