Excerpt from Bulletin of the United States Fish Commission, for 1895, Vol. 15
While working on the embryology of Alpheus several years a go, I decided to study the development of the lobster for the purpose of comparison. An opportunity was ed'ared in the summer of 1889, which I spent at the laboratory of the United States Fish Commission at Woods Hole, Massachusetts. In the spring of that year I had also received, through the kindness of Dr. G. H. Parker, a considerable quantity of embryo logical material of the lobster, representing particularly its later stages of development.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book, the result of five years of research, explores the American Lobster. It begins by describing its environment, its habits, and how it relates to other creatures in its habitat. The book then delves into the lobster's reproduction, beginning with mating habits, and following the life cycle from egg, to hatched larva, through each of its seven larval stages, and finally to the time when it takes on its adult form. The author carefully chronicles the changes in the lobster's appearance through each of its stages of development. The author then examines the lobster's defense mechanisms, and how they have evolved over time. Following is a detailed description of the lobster's anatomy, including its sensory organs. The author goes into great detail on the lobster's physiology, with a particular focus on its complex digestive system. Included are thirty-nine detailed illustrations, including plates detailing the lobster organ systems. The plates are examined in context in the text. The book concludes with a look at the history of lobster fishing, as well as the economic significance of the lobster today.
