The guest of Polycrates, who ran away from his host because he was for ever fortunate, was like one of those critics, of the Jeremy Collier school, who cannot witness a modest success without, to speak metaphorically, trying to slit the nose of the author. For my own part, I have little reason to complain; my task is rather to be grateful, and I take the opportunity of the appearance of a second edition of my anecdotical sketches, to give expression to such gratitude, with all the heartiness which the public patronage deserves.
