Synopsis
This book chronicles the activity of the Board of Taxation Commissioners of Nevada from 1899-1900, nearly a century ago. The board was tasked with investigating and prosecuting tax delinquencies in the state, but in practice campaigned for reform of the tax system, challenging under-assessment and working to spread the tax burden more fairly. The author, who was appointed to the board by the Governor of Nevada, provides a detailed account of the challenges faced in promoting a more equitable system, including resistance from powerful corporations and disagreements over the board's authority. Despite these obstacles, the board made progress, advocating for higher property valuations and lower tax rates, and laying the groundwork for the implementation of a fairer tax system in Nevada.

About the Author
An attorney and former Louisiana state senator, Bill Jones participated in the family business of ranching and learned to cowboy at an early age. Following college, he worked for two years in the cattle business then attended law school at LSU. Despite his other business pursuits, Jones never quit cowboying, having worked cattle from the Louisiana marshes to the rolling plains of Texas and the Rocky Mountains. He lives in Ruston, Louisiana.
