Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book follows the adventures of a giant matamore, a sort of cruel buffoon, a moral and physical monstrosity, one of the most seductive and greatest lords of the court of Louis XIV; a poor and austere old Dutch philosopher, an eminent scholar renowned political mind, and scientist who had SPINOZA as his disciple and JEAN DE WITT as his friend; a young lady of high nobility, taking devotion to the point of heroism; a beautiful and chaste young woman, also titled, and also taking the sacred oath of fidelity to the point of heroism; and finally, a graceful, timid and tender teenager: such are the main actors in the drama that is about to be recounted. The notes, supporting documents and facsimiles will prove to the last evidence that the author of this book has complied with all the requirements, with all the developments of this entirely historical context, with the most scrupulous abnegation of invention. But from this procedure, as well as from the very nature of the subject, there had to arise a serious imperfection in the artistic combination of this work, and the author is the first to point it out among all. Singular chance, these six characters, of different characters, natures, states and countries, although all marching towards the same goal led however by interests and passions extremely opposed, found themselves almost all strangers to each other and three of them saw each other for the first time during the denouement of this adventure, to which they had nevertheless contributed in common. Now, to abandon oneself blindly to the thousand bizarre fantasies of this reality so varied in incidents; to highlight each of these serious, touching, serene or fierce physiognomies (by an incredible disdain for history, absolutely unknown or misunderstood until now) to show them in a complete and consequently with all their adhesions, if one can say so, surrounded by their accessories of family or position, it took to devote to the curious and studied painting of these figures and these contrasts of all kinds, a series of apparently isolated, but linked between them by thought, or rather by the indomitable will of LATEAUMONT, whose moral force powerfully dominates the action, as its physical force dominates the actors. Hence the extreme abundance, or rather the abuse of the infinitely varied perspectives, which can be justly reproached for this rigorous reproduction of real and accomplished facts. And yet, on finishing reading this work, one will perhaps remain persuaded that it was impossible to present it otherwise, especially wanting above all to let glimpse the innumerable paths by which these characters so diverse were to arrive at the same goal. If in this book, one unmasks, in an almost brutal way, many false appearances of that timeâ"men and things of the Great Century or of the Great King, as they sayâ"never will the assertion lack evidence. If then, in some reader, recalling by chance the unshakeable convictions hitherto upheld by the author, about the incessant pre-eminence of evil over good, the permanent triumph of vice over virtue, etc. If this reader thought to be astonished at not seeing any eccentric system supported about this work nevertheless very favorable to the application of these pessimistic theories of the past, the author of these lines would answer that, in their imperceptible evolutions, even the most secondary minds sometimes seriously experiment life, and that the more they gravitate towards truth (thus at least as man says in his pride), the more the circle of realities that they believe to traverse, seems to narrow and that they finally arrive at a point where the illusions of vice seem to them as exorbitant, as the illusions of virtue seemed to them formerly. Then one recognizes their nothingness with a cold and secret bitterness; because the belief in evil is still a kind of belief, a blind faith in the superior and exceptional intelligence of vice, which knows how to say o. print-on-demand item.
