Excerpt from This Troubled World
Then, ten years or so later, when I was just under thirty, I was standing with some friends one day on the Malvern Hills, where, five hundred years before, Piers Plowman had meditated on a society gravely menaced, it seems, by upstart ways, when high over the brow of the Herefordshire beacon in front of us came an aeroplane, piloted by a French competi tor in a pioneer flight round England. It was hardly to be believed, and yet there it was. I remember the first time when, as I watched a man pass me on a bicycle in the street, his legs suddenly stopped go ing round, and the bicycle still went on with his feet on the pedals. I had never heard of such a thing as a freewheel, and I thought I was suffering from hal lucinations. How much more fantastic was the sight of this little man on his great wings up in the air. And that is not more than twenty-five years ago.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the transformation of society during the author's lifetime (born in 1873), focusing on the rise of machinery and its profound impact on human existence. The author, a noted scholar and critic, argues that while machines have brought great benefits, they have also fostered a dangerous obsession with mastery and efficiency, leading to a decline in other pursuits and a devaluation of human connection. The author explores the ways in which this mechanical mindset has permeated various aspects of life, from the arts to international relations, and cautions against the potential consequences of prioritizing the machine over human values. Ultimately, the book offers a thought-provoking analysis of the complex relationship between humanity and technology, inviting readers to consider the implications of our increasingly mechanized world.
