Synopsis

Excerpt from An Apology for the Clergy of Scotland: Chiefly Oppos'd to the Censures, Calumnies, and Accusations of a Late Presbyterian Vindicator, in a Letter to a Friend; Wherein His Vanity, Partiality and Sophistry Are Modestly Reproved

I believe the Ringleaders of the Presbyterians at Edenburgb will give the Vindicator but little thanks for mentioning this Tumult that is openly avo w\' cd by thtmfelves. And he may ask, not only the forementioned Gentleman, but alfo the Mailer of F and feveral others (whofe names are concealed, and may continue (0, unlefs the Vindicator, or fome of his Afl'cciater, by their indzfcretionr oblige me to be more particular) whether they were there, and what aglorious Figure they made. If it be unpleafant to name particular Gentltmen, they may thank their Vindicator who obtrudes fuchfulfitme Lies upon the World, when the Matter offaél: is fo very recent, and known to all the Inhabitants at Edenburghs and the Leading Presbyterian: are very loth to part with the honor of this Atehievement, fo agreeable to their confiant Geninr and former Praé'tiles for one of their chief Advocates pleaded lately before thejudges, in the Tryal of Mr. Wallace, thatthey'that Pillaged the Kings Houfe were a Company of Grave, Rea/onable, Thinking Men, Commanded bya Lord of the Seflionr. We fee then by this one fingle Inflance the Spirit of Lies and Vanity that runs through his Book. For if it be undenyable that this Rabble Reformation was concerted by the Ringleader: of the F aélion. Then he mull own that the Tumults were not the accidental Efi'ortr of fome angry inconfiderable People but the united endeavours of the Presbyterians.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book consists of the author's response to a critique of the Presbyterian clergy in Scotland. The critique centers around accusations of tyranny, excessive religious zeal, and sedition, with its author, not identified here, claiming the Presbyterian clergy instigated the violent persecution faced by the Episcopal clergy in Western Scotland after the revolution, and were themselves in the wrong for rebelling against King Charles I. The author disputes this, arguing the Presbyterian clergy were right to resist the king, who had overstepped his authority by outlawing the Presbyterian religion in Scotland, and that the resulting violence against the Episcopal clergy, while unfortunate, was not organized by the Presbyterians. The author further argues that the Episcopal clergy were themselves not entirely innocent, having played a role in instigating the persecution of the Presbyterians under previous English monarchs, and that this persecution led to the escalation of conflict in the region. The author concludes by asserting the strength of Presbyterian governance in Scotland, particularly in the Western shires, and dismissing the critique's allegations of Presbyterian extremism and sedition as without merit.
