This book presents a series of letters written by the author, a farmer from Pennsylvania who uses the pseudonym Fabius, in order to generate support for the ratification of the new U.S. constitution, which was first proposed in 1787. The author's main goal is to convince his readers that under the proposed constitution, liberty and security for all Americans would be ensured. The letters were published at a time when many Americans were uncertain about whether to support the new constitution, or to advocate for a system with fewer centralized powers. Fabius draws on classical sources, including Greek history, to argue that a strong, unified nation is more likely to be able to resist tyranny and promote prosperity than a loose confederation of states. He also emphasizes the need for a bill of rights to protect individual liberties within a strong national framework. The arguments presented in this book helped to shape the political thought of the founding fathers, and the ideas presented in the letters remain relevant to discussions about the balance between individual liberty and national security.
