Excerpt from Some Makers of the Modern Spirit: A Symposium
This does not mean, however, that the book does not form a unity. Each contributor has expressed his own view on the subject allotted to him with full regard to the plan of the series as a whole. This plan was to present in historical order some of the main ideas which have been woven together in the course of the last centuries to form the pattern of the modern spirit. To this end the diversity of outlook represented by the various contributors is essential, for it is of first impor tance that a historical person and the ideas for which he stood should be presented by some one who is at least in general sympathy with them.
I should like to take this opportunity to thank the British Broadcasting Corporation for their readiness to facilitate the publication of the talks in book form.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the evolution of the Western spirit, tracing its transformation from the unifying embrace of medieval culture to the increasingly fragmented world we inhabit. The author explores the pivotal figures and ideas that shaped this transition, from the scholasticism of St. Thomas Aquinas to the revolutionary fervor of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The book delves into the tension between the advancement of science and the disintegration of traditional values, demonstrating how scientific progress, while expanding our understanding of the world, has also led to the erosion of inherited cultural frameworks. The author argues that this process of cultural fragmentation has created a society increasingly reliant on external mechanisms and impersonal forces, a stark contrast to the earlier organic unity of medieval civilization. Ultimately, this book offers a thought-provoking analysis of the forces that have shaped Western civilization, providing insights into the challenges and opportunities that arise from the ongoing struggle between the individual and the collective.
