Die Bestimmung der Wärme, welche die Verbrennung und die Athmung erzeugen, bietet nicht mehr Schwierigkeiten. Man verbrennt die verbrennbaren Körper im Innern der Kugel; man lässt die Thiere in ihr athmen. Da aber die Erneuerung der Luft unumgänglich nöthig ist bei diesen beiden Operationen, wird es nothwendig sein, eine Verbindung zwischen dem Innern der Kugel und der umgebenden Atmosphäre herzustellen und, damit die Einführung der neuen Luft keinen merklichen Fehler in den Resultaten erzeuge, muss man diese Versuche bei einer Temperatur machen, die nur wenig von 0 verschieden ist, oder mindestens die Luft, die man einführt, auf diese Temperatur ab kühlen. Die Bestimmung der specifischen Wärme der verschiedenen Gase ist schwieriger wegen ihrer geringen Dichtigkeit; denn wenn man sich begnügen würde, -sie in Gefässen einzuschliessen wie andere Flüssigkeiten, so würde die Menge des geschmolze nen Eises so gering sein, dass das Ergebniss des Versuches sehr unsicher würde. Aber wenn man im Innern der Kugel eine _in Form einer Schlange gekrümmte Röhre anbringt und durch diese Röhre einen Luftstrom von beliebiger Beschaffenheit leitet und mit Hilfe zweier Thermometer, die man in diesen 'luftstrom bringt, das eine beim [296] Eintritt und das andere beim Aus tritt aus der Kugel, und so die Zahl von Graden bestimmt, um welche die Luft sich bei ihrem Durchgang abkühlt, so kann man eine erhebliche Luftmenge abkühlen und genau ihre specifische Wärme bestimmen. Dasselbe Verfahren kann angewendet wer den, um die Wärme, welche bei der Verdichtung von Dämpfen der verschiedenen Flüssigkeiten sich entwickelt, zu bestimmen.
