Mit Ausnahme des zweiten Stockes geboren alle diese Räumlichkeiten ihrer Entstehung nach dem Mittelalter an. Die St. N icolauskapelle, in welcher Altäre des heil. Nicolaus, Erhardus u. A. Sich befanden, diente als Kapelle bis zur Refor mation, der über ihr gelegene Saal als Ver sammlungsort für die Ausschüsse des Basler Concils (1431 bis späterhin auch als Sitzungssaal des Domkapitels. Der Betsaal wurde im 15. Jahrhundert durch den Bischof Johann von Venningen über dem Kreuzgang aufgebaut und für die Bibliothek des Domstifts hergerichtet; in der Folgezeit fanden in ihm akademische Feierlichkeiten, dann Gottesdienste statt. Archivsaal und Schatzkammer waren Aufbe wahrungsorte des Archivs sowie der kirchlichen Geräte und Gewänder des Domstifts.
