Synopsis

Lord Macaulay begins his Essay on Clive thus: We have always thought it strange that, while the history of theS panish empire in America is familiarly known to all the nations of Europe, the great actions of our countrymen in theE ast should, even among ourselves, excite little interest. Every schoolboy knows who imprisoned Montezuma, and who strangled A tahualpa. But we doubt whether one in ten, even among English gentlemen of highly cultivated minds, can tell who won the battle of Buxar, who perpetrated the massacre of Patna, whether Sujah Dowlah ruled in Oude or inT ravancore, or whether Holkar was aH indoo or aM ussulman. What Macaulay remarks in these introductory lines about the educated Englishmen of his time may, with justice, be applied to the Hindus of the present day, who, though well versed in the details of the histories of foreign nations, are ignorant of even the most important events in the lives of their ancient heroes and saints. The reason of this anomaly is plain enough. All their time is taken Up in reading English authors and consequently works written in Vernacular are naturally neglected. It is, there fore, with the object of imparting some knowledge of the Purans to such of theE nglish reading public as are either unacquainted with any of the Vernaculars of this country or as are unaccustomed to read Vernacular books, that we have undertaken to publish this series. Our thanks are due to those gentlemen who have kindly subscribed for the publication as well as to those who have rendered us assistance in other ways. Bombay 1891. DUBHASHI CO.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the rich tapestry of Hindu mythology, specifically focusing on the epic tale of Rama. The author masterfully interweaves stories of gods, demons, and mortals, creating a vivid narrative that explores themes of love, duty, and destiny. Set against the backdrop of ancient India, the book recounts the life of Rama, an incarnation of the god Vishnu. We journey with Rama as he faces exile, battles formidable demons, and ultimately rescues his beloved wife Sita from the clutches of the demon king Ravana. Along the way, we encounter a vibrant cast of characters, each with their own unique role to play in the grand scheme of the universe. The author's insightful commentary sheds light on the deeper philosophical and spiritual significance of Rama's story. We learn about the importance of dharma (righteous duty), the power of devotion, and the eternal struggle between good and evil. By immersing ourselves in this timeless epic, we gain a profound understanding of the values and beliefs that have shaped Hindu culture for centuries. The book's enduring message of hope, courage, and the triumph of good over evil continues to resonate with readers of all backgrounds, making it a valuable addition to any collection of world literature.
