Written by James W. Redhouse, A Simplified Grammar of the Ottoman-Turkish Language is an instructional textbook intended for language learners and a valuable tool for those looking to learn Ottoman-Turkish.
A Simplified Grammar of the Ottoman-Turkish Language is structured much as you would expect an instructional text on grammar to be. The opening sections are dedicated to introducing the learner to the letters and orthography of the language. Phonetic pronunciations are provided in English, and English is of course used as the language of explanation throughout the text. The second part of the book is devoted to vocabulary and accidence. The largest part of the text, as the name of the book suggests, is dedicated to instructing the reader on Ottoman-Turkish grammar rules. The conjugation of verbs is vital to learning any language, and thus the greatest portion of this book is dedicated to this topic. The book concludes with a discussion of Ottoman syntax, and the great differences between written and spoken Turkish.
James Redhouse has created a fairly complete introduction to Ottoman-Turkish grammar. The book is presented in a logical style and demonstrates the information in an easy to digest fashion. Unfortunately, this text does not contain any study exercises, so those looking to practice the grammar taught in this book will need to look elsewhere.
Readers should be aware that Ottoman-Turkish is not the Turkish of modern Turkey. However, if you are still interested in learning the Ottoman-Turkish language, specifically the grammar rules, A Simplified Grammar of the Ottoman-Turkish Language is a valuable tool.
