There happened in St. Petersburg during the forties an event which startled society. A handsome youth, a prince, an officer in the Cuirassiers for whom every one had predicted the rank of aide-de-camp and a brilliant career attached to the person of Emperor Nicholas I., quitted the service. He broke with his beautiful fiancee, a lady-I n-waiting, and a favourite of the empress, just a fortnight before the wedding-day, and giving his small estate to his sister, retired to a monastery to become a monk. To those who were Ignorant of the hidden motives, this was an extraordinary and unaccountable step; but as regards Prince Stephen Kasatsky himself, it was such a natural move that he could not conceive an alternative. His father, a retired colonel of the Guards, died when the son was twelve.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book tells the story of Prince Stephen Kasatsky, a young man in 19th-century Russia who chooses to abandon a life of privilege and military ambition to become a monk. The author delves into the complex motivations behind Kasatsky's dramatic decision, exploring themes of ambition, love, faith, and the yearning for spiritual fulfillment. Kasatsky's journey takes him from the glittering world of Imperial St. Petersburg to the austere seclusion of a remote hermitage, where he grapples with the temptations of desire and the depths of his own faith. The author vividly captures the internal struggle of a man seeking meaning in a world that seems to offer only fleeting pleasures, forcing the reader to confront universal questions about the nature of true happiness and the ultimate pursuit of the soul. Through Kasatsky's dramatic transformation, the author offers a powerful glimpse into the heart of 19th-century Russian society and the enduring search for spiritual peace amidst the turmoil of the human experience.
