Synopsis

Excerpt from A Dictionary of Applied Physics

The efficiency. Â Several kinds of efficiencies are recognised as applicable to pumps and blowers; of these the mechanical efficiency, or the ratio of the useful work done to the total work expended, is alone applicable to all types. Both terms of the ratio need further definition to rid them of ambiguity. The work expended is usually taken to mean either (a) the work expended on the gas in giving to it energy, com pressive, kinetic, or thermal, or (b) the work supplied to the mechanism of which the pump consists, including that lost in friction of solid or liquid parts. The efficiency reckoned with (a) is often termed the gas efficiency; that reckoned with (b) the over-all efficiency.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the fascinating world of air and gas pumps, delving into the principles and practical applications of these essential devices. The author, a prominent scholar in the field, meticulously traces the historical development of air pumps, from the earliest designs attributed to Otto von Guericke to the more sophisticated models developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The book examines various types of pumps, including aerostatic, aerodynamic, and high-vacuum pumps, each classified according to its unique operating principles. The author discusses the critical working characteristics of these pumps, such as their pressure range, pumping speed, and efficiency, providing in-depth analysis of their strengths and limitations. From the humble bellows used by blacksmiths to the complex rotary pumps employed in industrial settings, the book illustrates the wide-ranging applications of air and gas pumps across diverse fields. The text underscores the significance of these devices in various industries, from power generation and manufacturing to scientific research and medical technology. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history, science, and engineering of air and gas pumps. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
