The selections here made have been taken from the first half of the whole work. They stop short of the natural break, in Marbots life, where he ceases to be an aide de camp and gets his own regiment. Perhaps it should be mentioned that the astonishing adventures of Lisette and her rider on the field of Eylau have been omitted in favour of the boat scene on the Danube. There was not room for both, and the perils by water, while in themselves offering an interesting variety, serve to introduce the campaign of Wagram, which is more instructive than that of Eylau.
