Synopsis

Excerpt from Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires, Preserved in the Department of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum, Vol. 10: 1820-1827

Satires Dr. Dorothy George has reached the penultimate stage of her task and the year 1827. One further volume will bring the Catalogue down to 1832 and the passing of the Reform Bill, Which has been fixed as the limit of the work. This date marks not only the end of an historical era, but also the Virtual end of the type of political caricature Which has formed the bulk of the material catalogued in this and the preceding volumes. The scurrility and bitter personal invective of the age of Rowlandson and Gillray finally disappear and are replaced by the gentlemanly irony of H. B. And his imitators. Nor after 1832 does the material in the Department provide the continuous picture of political and social life Which it had done hitherto and Which made the elaborate treatment it has received in these volumes so valuable.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the vibrant and often tumultuous world of political caricature in England between 1820 and 1827, a period marked by significant social and political shifts. The author meticulously catalogues and analyses a vast collection of satirical prints, offering a unique lens through which to understand the major events and personalities of the era. The book explores the transition from the Georgian era's unbridled satirical expressions to the emergence of a more restrained Victorian sensibility. It examines how caricatures served as a powerful tool for both political commentary and propaganda, reflecting the public's anxieties and aspirations. The author sheds light on the impact of key historical events, such as the Queen Caroline affair and the Cato Street Conspiracy, on the evolution of caricature. Readers will discover the changing representations of iconic figures like John Bull and the evolving styles of renowned caricaturists, including George Cruikshank and Theodore Hook. The book delves into the satirical techniques employed, such as symbolism, allegory, and parody, and explores the complex interplay between visual satire and the written word. By offering a comprehensive and insightful analysis of political caricature during this transformative period, the book provides valuable insights into the power of satire as a reflection of social and political change, and its enduring legacy in shaping public opinion and political discourse.
