Excerpt from Tests of Several Types of Small Gasolene Engines: Thesis
In any engine, no matter how well it may be constructed, there is always a loss of power due to several causes which can not be changed in this engine. There are losses due to the friction of all the moving parts and also due to the friction of the gases both in entering and leaving the cylinder. Another loss of power is due to the absorption of heat by the jacket water and the heat carried out of the cylinder by the charge on the exhaust stroke. The balance of the heat put in the cylinder is delivered in usefull work.
