Synopsis
This book presents a comprehensive guide to the various devices and methods developed by the Soil Conservation Service for measuring runoff from plots and drainage basins. Runoff as described here is typically produced by intense rainfall, and is often intermittent. Due to this, as well as the presence of floating debris and eroded material, the author found that standard current meter procedures and sharp-crested weirs were inadequate. The book presents several new and innovative devices, including HS, H, and HL flumes, Parshall flumes, triangular weirs, and multislot (Geib) divisors. The author provides a detailed overview of each device, including its design, construction, and calibration. The book concludes with detailed instructions for setting water-level recorders on each type of device. The author's research significantly expanded and improved upon the tools available for the measurement of runoff from agricultural areas.
