Excerpt from The Chess Player's Magazine, 1866, Vol. 2
The prospects of Chess for the present year are, we think, highly encouraging. In all probability a meeting of the British Chess Association will be held in the course of next summer. No meeting of that important body has been held since 1862, and it is desirable for the interests of Chess that another year should not he suffered to pass away without its being convoked. If its next meeting be (as we hope and expect it will) as successful as the congress of 1862, there will be little more left for us to desiderate.

This book reviews what has been accomplished in the past season in both home and abroad chess circles, notices any new accessions to the literature of the game, and considers prospects for the ensuing year. Providing a full account of the agreeable Dublin Congress, it also covers matches played by telegraph between the St James and Dublin Clubs. The book continues to hope that the erroneous award of the committee in the problem tournament connected with Le Palamede will yet be reversed. German chess periodicals are discussed, along with the termination of the great civil war in America. The author's hope is that Mr Morphy will re-enter chess circles and give fresh proofs of his talent, and that a match is currently in arrangement between the well-known English amateur, Mr Mackenzie, and Mr Perrin of New York. Filled with valuable work and essays, this book is a must-read for chess players of all skill levels.
