This book is the result of the author's three separate research expeditions to Newfoundland, and details his impressions of the country, its people, and its potential for agricultural and mineral wealth. It also discusses the shing, cod and herring industries, and the possible improvements of these industries. The author was adamant that Newfoundland could be a prosperous country if its people focused on agriculture, lumbering and mining rather than exclusively on shing. The author was determined to encourage small farms and small farmers' unions for the sale of their produce. The book also delves into the political organization, revenue budget, public education, primary schools, public assistance, scientic and literary institutions, and a description of the towns of St. Johns, Harbour Grace, Hearts Content, Carbonear, Placentia, Twillingate, Burin, Burgeo, Channel, St. Georges Bay, Bay of Islands, Bonne Bay and Ingarnachoix. The book concludes with a descriptive round trip of the Island back to St. Johns, by Hare, White, tre -Dame, Bonavista, Trinity and Conception Bays.
