They have not been as successful as they could have wished in compiling a list of the miniatures which can be traced as the work of either artist, and they appeal to all persons to whom this volume may come, to assist them in preparing a longer and fuller list of such works. There are many hundreds of miniatures named in the fee - book which they have been unable to find, and although they are aware that many have perished, especially in certain notable fires, yet they are convinced that there are still a large number belonging to private owners which remain undescribed, and they will be grateful to any persons who own such miniatures, or know of their existence, if they will kindly write and give particulars of them.
