Excerpt from Some Characteristics of Quenching Curves
Admittedly, the described methods and relations are empirical for they are not based on the fundamental constants of materials, but. Upon direct experimental determination of cooling times under a variety of conditions. Their accuracy or that of similar computa tions for other coolants depends upon the accuracy attained in the experiments upon which they are based. For this reason it would be unwise, under ordinary conditions, to base calculations for a given coolant on a single cooling curve. A safer course would be to secure curves for at least two widely different sizes and shapes and in both cases to demand at least two consistent experiments.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the relationship between the size and shape of steel samples and their cooling rates when immersed in different coolants. Drawing from meticulous experiments, the authors have established that under specific cooling conditions, the time taken for the center of a steel sample to cool to a certain point is inversely proportional to the surface area of the sample relative to its volume, raised to a power between 1 and 2. Additionally, the authors found that the time required for the center of a steel sample to experience an initial 2% temperature drop, which they term 'lag', increases with the size of the sample and is influenced by the cooling medium, being greater in slower coolants like air compared to faster coolants like water. These findings provide a robust framework for predicting the cooling behavior of steel samples of varying dimensions and shapes when quenched in coolants, offering valuable insights for optimizing heat treatment processes in industrial settings.
