Synopsis
This book is a digital computer simulation of vehicular traffic on a nine-block section of city street. The simulation, which the author refers to as NBS Simulation II, has been created to study the sensitivity of traffic flow to altered signal settings, to measure the effect of changed offsets, cycle length and splits with a view to arriving at optimal timing and to explore the capacity of the signal system to handle increased volumes of traffic. The results can be used to make predictions about how changing an actual street might affect traffic patterns. As a specialized model, this book has great potential in the field of further research effort because of its accuracy and the potential to refine, extend and generalize the ideas and methods presented.
