Excerpt from The Âryabhatîya: A Manual of Astronomy, With the Commentary Bhatadîpikâ of Paramâdîçvara
Though the reading followed by the author of the Prakacika is erroneous, both from an astronomical and grammatical point of view, it can not be denied that the error was one of long standing. For we know by Bhaskara's severe criticisms that Lalla, the author of the dhivrddhida-tantra, had fallen into the same error. Now Lalla is more than once called a disciple of Aryabhata, and whether this statement be rigidly correct or not, he certainly was a contemporaneous writer, for he uses the same epoch with the latter, as may be seen p. 58 of this edition.'

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of Indian astronomy, exploring the life and works of Suryadeva, a prominent figure in the field. The author contends that Suryadeva emerged during a period of scientific decline in India, following the era of the renowned astronomer Bhaskara. Despite this, Suryadeva's contributions were significant, as he sought to reform and revitalize Indian astronomy. The text examines Suryadeva's critical perspective on the work of his predecessors, particularly Aryabhata, and his efforts to correct perceived inaccuracies in their astronomical calculations. The author situates Suryadeva's work within the broader context of Indian astronomical history, highlighting his role in shaping the field's trajectory. Through a meticulous analysis of Suryadeva's writings and other relevant sources, the book sheds light on the intricate world of ancient Indian astronomy, its methods, and its evolution over time. The author's insights offer a deeper understanding of the challenges and triumphs faced by Indian astronomers as they sought to unravel the mysteries of the cosmos. Ultimately, this book reveals the enduring legacy of Suryadeva and his invaluable contributions to the advancement of astronomical knowledge in India.
