When a plant is attacked, the grower should Observe how the insect feeds, as such fact will help materially in deciding upon the proper remedy to apply. Injurious insects may be divided, roughly, into two classes, by the nature of their mouth parts, namely, (1) biting insects which bite and chew their food, such as caterpillars, and (2) sucking insects which suck up their food by means of their beaks, such as the aphids, the true bugs, the scale insects, etc. If the insect is a biting one, a stomach poison, such as lea-d arsenate, is usually applicable, but if the species is a sucking one, such poisons would be useless because the insect would insert its. Beak through the poison and reach a safe feeding place beneath. Sucking insects, therefore, contact insecticides are recommended, such for instance as preparations containing nicotine.

Certain insects. Such as. Aphids and white fly are best controlled by fumiga tion with a tobacco preparation or hydrocyanic acid gas. Boring or root destroy ing insects require a different treatment.

In this bulletin information is included which should assist the grower to recognize the various kinds of insect pests with which his plants may become infested. The remedies for the insects discussed have bee-n found of value and if the grower will follow these carefully, he will undoubtedly keep the pests under control and thereby protect his plants.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a comprehensive guide to the insects that plague greenhouse plants. Written by experts in the field, it details the identification, habits, and control of a wide range of insect pests, including leaf-eating insects, sucking insects, and those that bore into plant roots. The book also includes information on animal pests such as mites, sowbugs, and slugs, and discusses the beneficial insects that can help to control the pests. The book reflects the concerns of greenhouse operators in the 1940s, a time when the rise of commercial greenhouses presented unique challenges in controlling insect infestations. The author emphasizes the importance of prevention, recommending practices such as screening ventilators and doors to keep insects out and eliminating weed growth. He also discusses the use of a variety of chemical controls, including lead arsenate, Paris green, nicotine extracts, and hydrocyanic acid gas fumigation. The book explores the use of parasites as a natural control method and highlights the limitations of this approach. While the methods described may be outdated by current standards, this book provides a fascinating glimpse into the history of insect control in horticulture and offers valuable insights into the importance of early detection and preventative measures. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the challenges faced by greenhouse growers and the evolution of pest management practices.
