C'est ainsi qu'après avoir mis en relief les brillantes qualités de Sultan Mohammed, Jean - Marie ne cherche pas à dissimuler les vices qui venaient en ternir l'éclat et, qu'après avoirmontré, au sujet de Gentile Bellini, les côtés généreux et sympathiques de son caractère, il lui reproche ensuite sa_cruaute dont il cite deux exemples, choisis parmi bien d'autres,'à l'appui de son affirmation. Il se tait sur les causes du départ de_gentile; mais son silence même est un argument pour donner, à penser qu'il provint de causes toutes naturelles, et serait une sorte de réfutation du motif allégué par Ridolfi, si on n'avait, pour expliquer ce retour quelque peu précipité, les préparatifs de la guerre que le Sultan se proposait de conduire en personne, et dont le but était connu de lui seul.
