It brings together Bibles, chronicles, histories, tracts, and literary works that would have been familiar to readers in early modern England. The collection is particularly rich in materials from the reigns of Elizabeth I, James I, and Charles I, a period of significant social, political, and religious change. The first English Bible authorised by the Church of England, the 1611 King James Bible, is perhaps the most significant book of this era. This book is housed in the South African Library in Cape Town, and is a testament to the power of print to preserve and transmit the ideas and knowledge of the past.
