Written in 1878, it provides a fascinating glimpse into the social conventions and class structure of its time. The club, named St. James, sought to create a space for networking, entertainment, and relaxation among its elite membership, which included prominent figures from Montreal's business, political, and social spheres. The book's significance lies not only in its historical value but also in its insights into the social dynamics and aspirations of Montreal's upper classes during the Victorian era. The rules and regulations meticulously outlined in the constitution reveal the club's commitment to maintaining exclusivity, order, and decorum within its luxurious confines. The inclusion of rules governing the payment of entrance fees, subscription dues, and penalties for noncompliance highlights the importance of financial standing and social conformity within the club's membership. The book also touches on the club's cultural and recreational activities, such as the provision of billiard rooms, smoking rooms, and a library. The rules governing the introduction of guests and the prohibition of certain games and behaviors demonstrate the club's efforts to foster a refined and respectable atmosphere. Overall, this book is a unique and illuminating document that sheds light on the social customs, aspirations, and values of an exclusive social club in the heart of Victorian Montreal.
