Excerpt from Agricultural Education, an Individual, State and National Necessity, With Suggestions for the Establishment and Endowment of an Agricultural College in Michigan: An Address Before the Agricultural Society of Calboun County, by Robert F. Johnstone, Editor of the Michigan Farmer, Delivered at Marshall, October 12, 1854
Think you, that if instead of the tomahawk, the bow and the scalping knife, the dusky aborigines that you have driven from these forests, had possessed the axe, the plow, and the reaper, they would so soon and so easily have yielded to your advances? N 0, had these broad, fair fields been tilled by them; had their roof-trees been as deeply rooted in the soil as yours are now, they would have bid defiance to your puny attempts at supplant ing them, as you have since to their threatened return to their ancient hun ting grounds. Their tomahawks and their arrows passed through the air, and left no trace of where they had been; their foot-paths through the un broken forest, narrow, devious and darkened as their own minds, have dis appeared under your furrows, and their very existence is fast becoming a tradition of the past.
