Excerpt from Specimens of Early English, Vol. 2: Part II From Robert of Gloucester to Gower, A. D. 1289-A. D. 1393
AN intimate and thorough acquaintance with a language is only to be acquired by an attentive study of its literature. Grammars and histories of literature are, at best, but guides, and are not always wholly trustworthy; the statements and principles they contain need verification as well as illustra tion, and this necessitates a certain amount of familiarity with the literature itself.
In studying the latest periods of the English language there is no lack of materials, and the student has it in his power to correct, by his own reading and observation, any errors of fact that may occur in the text-books he uses.
