This book reports on irregularities found in space-grown crystals, providing much-needed fundamental scientific insight for optimizing growth conditions and establishing superior growth environments. The findings also hold far-reaching scientific, industrial, and health implications. The author explores the irregularities in three crystals grown in space, four grown entirely on the ground, and compares the two sets. The reduction in multi-phase formation in microgravity appears to be associated, in one of the two cases, with gradual changes in the lattice over a distance of millimeters. The results, supported by independent observations, suggest that lattice regularity may be less important than other factors in influencing device performance.
