Synopsis
This book investigates the geological history and structure of the Canadian Shield, a region of Precambrian rocks that forms the core of North America. The author examines the relationship between the Shield and the surrounding Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, proposing that the southern edge of the Shield is the result of extensive faulting that occurred after the deposition of the sedimentary rocks. This faulting created a steep escarpment, known as the Laurentian Plateau escarpment, which marks the boundary between the Shield and the Paleozoic lowlands. The author argues that the escarpment is not the result of erosion, but rather of tectonic activity, and that the Paleozoic strata originally extended much farther north over the Shield than they do today.
