Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book chronicles the watershed period just before the Battle of Trafalgar, from the close of the American Revolutionary War to the turn of the century. In these decades, great change occurred within sea warfare. The author argues that one reason for Britain's victorious position in the Napoleonic maritime campaigns was a profound shift in strategy, led by Horatio Nelson, toward more direct, less cautious tactics, mirroring developments in land warfare. This pivotal time of transition saw not only an ideological shift from aristocratic detachment to a more democratic zeal for battle but also a re-examination of the traditional rules of engagement. This book captures how Britain ascended to sea power in the early 19th century through the lens of Lord Nelson's brilliant innovations in strategy and his own relentless determination to win.
