Frontispiece line drawing of Morgan. Biography of American Revolutionary War hero Daniel Morgan (1736-1802). A native if New Jersey, he moved to Winchester Virginia and joined the militia and at the start of the war recruited a company of riflemen (nicknamed "Morgan's Riflemen". He was part of Benedict Arnold's ill fated Quebec expedition and was also with him during the Saratoga campaign. After serving in the Philadelphia Campaign he resigned in 1779 from the Continental Army but returned and led the Continental troops to victory in the Battle of Cowpens. He was famed for using his sharpshooters to fire from concealment in woods and behind stone fences, a tactic for which the British troops, used to marching in precise order, were not prepared. After the war, Morgan was called back to service during the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794. He was elected to the House of Representatives as a Federalist in1796, serving one term.
