Reprint. 393 pages + 1 of ads. Undated but circa 1895 based on the format and titles mentioned in the ads. The book is reasonably firmly bound in the publisher's patterned red cloth, lettered in gilt to the spine, the extremities are rubbed and bumped and the boards are slightly marked, with minor tears to the cloth, the spine is slightly cocked. The text block is slightly toned, foxed and marked with some dog-eared page corners, the gutters are cracked and there is minor cracking at points throughout, there is a small bookseller's blind-stamp to the front endpaper, a small pencil doodle of a bell to the rear blank, the top corner of the title page has been cut off, presumably to remove an unwanted ownership inscription, and the cutter has been slightly over-enthusiastic and partially sliced into the following two pages. A novel of crime and punishment, in which a man's course in life is set by a dramatic act of murder that returns to haunt him and thwart his progress, until he eventually finds redemption in death. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book follows the story of two friends Andrew Hardell, a yeoman's son on the rise to a life in the church, and Anthony Hardell, a man from a wealthy family who finds himself on a downward moral trajectory, despite his commitment to a life in the clergy. In the midst of a serene, picturesque, Scottish landscape, the author explores the frailty and resilience of the human condition, particularly the male psyche, in the face of internal struggle and the undulating turns of fate. A tale of love, friendship, and the consequences of our choices, this book's insights into the human spirit remain as resonant today as they were when they were first written. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
