Condition: new. Pages: 527 Language: Estonian. 9789949085217.

Present book refers to author's realist period, when he created his best novels and short stories dealing with war and social problems in the rural environment. Short stories collection includes seven war themed novels which describe living in war-torn village. Novels cycle substance and conflicts come from the birth of Estonian Republic in 1918. Growing disparity between the rich and poor causes conflict which leads to the war and life-and-death struggle. Here author shows purity of literary genre: accuracy, focus, actuality. Albert Kivikas (1898-1978) had three quite distinct roles in Estonian literary history. He is one of the major authors in Estonian literature to have experimented with futurism, with pieces meant to irritate the petit bourgeois. The collection Lendavad sead (Flying Pigs, 1919), printed on the labels of beer bottles, became quite legendary. Author's second outstanding role in Estonian literature was neo-realism, which came with the birth of an independent republic. He abandoned his bohemian convictions and devoted himself to the Republic and realism. Kivikas began sharply criticising the neo-romantic manner of writing which prevailed in Estonian literature in the first decades of the century. Notable works of this period is "trilogy of smallholders", novels about rural life, Jüripäev (St. George's Day, 1921), Jaanipäev (St. John's Day, 1924), and Mihklipäev (St. Michael's Day, 1924). Kivikas's third and most lasting role is the subject of Estonian War of Independence. His best known novel Names in Marble (1936), tracking the exploits of the brave young soldiers, became instantly popular. Today's perception of the classic Albert Kivikas is - to the Republic, the all-embracing experience of his younger days, he devoted himself more passionately than any other Estonian writer. Peet Aren (1889 1970) - famous Estonian painter, graphic artist and prominent illustrator of books. Early graphic art works expressed the national romantic and stylising manner of the "Mir Iskusstva", later he turned to Expressionism and Art Deco.

Tartu: self-published, 1919. Octavo (22.5 × 15 cm). Original staple-stitched wrappers featuring black letter-press typography over unused labels from a Tsarist-era brewing company; 22 pp. of text, printed to blank rectos of unused brewery labels; all in all, this copy contains samples of seven different labels. Spine extremities frayed and split along lower half; one page with cut; still a good copy of a book typically encountered in various states of completeness. Rare copy of the most iconic avant-garde book to emerge from the young Estonian republic, which was printed on the versos of unused beer labels from a Tsarist-era Tartu brewery (some labels are in Russian, though most in German). The labels were assembled randomly, and as a result each of the few documented copies differs both in terms of the wrapper design and versos of the text pages. Kivikas' prose poems are divided into two sections, "Singing Fish" and "Iron Sirens," and dwell on modern phenomena such as electricity, the cinema, and revolution (the final prose poem is entitled "Revolutsioon"). They clearly show his avant-garde orientation and, in particular, the influence of Futurism in their focus on technology and a desire to violate bourgeois notions of literary writing, which was the proclaimed goal of the present collection of texts. "This is Futurism at its most authentic, striding above all in the foot-steps of Russian Cubo-Futurism. [.] [Kivikas'] texts are replete with modern technology and momentum, but his central device involves absurd metaphors with a surrealistic effect ('clarinet-frogs', 'pitch-milk' etc.) and metamorphoses of creatures reminiscent of circus and silent film tricks." See "Geometrical Man" (Tallinn: KUMU, 2012), pp. 74-76. As of January 2024, KVK, OCLC show two copies worldwide, with none held in North America.
