Striking black, red and white avant-garde cover designed by Peet Aren. Present book refers to author's realist period, when he created his best novels and short stories dealing with war and social problems in the rural environment. Short stories collection includes seven war themed novels which describe living in war-torn village. Novels cycle substance and conflicts come from the birth of Estonian Republic in 1918. Growing disparity between the rich and poor causes conflict which leads to the war and life-and-death struggle. Here author shows purity of literary genre: accuracy, focus, actuality. Albert Kivikas (1898-1978) had three quite distinct roles in Estonian literary history. He is one of the major authors in Estonian literature to have experimented with futurism, with pieces meant to irritate the petit bourgeois. The collection Lendavad sead (Flying Pigs, 1919), printed on the labels of beer bottles, became quite legendary. Author's second outstanding role in Estonian literature was neo-realism, which came with the birth of an independent republic. He abandoned his bohemian convictions and devoted himself to the Republic and realism. Kivikas began sharply criticising the neo-romantic manner of writing which prevailed in Estonian literature in the first decades of the century. Notable works of this period is “trilogy of smallholders”, novels about rural life, Jüripäev (St. George’s Day, 1921), Jaanipäev (St. John’s Day, 1924), and Mihklipäev (St. Michael’s Day, 1924). Kivikas’s third and most lasting role is the subject of Estonian War of Independence. His best known novel Names in Marble (1936), tracking the exploits of the brave young soldiers, became instantly popular. Today’s perception of the classic Albert Kivikas is - to the Republic, the all-embracing experience of his younger days, he devoted himself more passionately than any other Estonian writer. Peet Aren (1889 – 1970) - famous Estonian painter, graphic artist and prominent illustrator of books. Early graphic art works expressed the national romantic and stylising manner of the "Mir Iskusstva", later he turned to Expressionism and Art Deco. Bookseller Inventory # 15
