Hardcover. 3p woodcuts/etchings index. (illustrator). 1st edition. NEAR FINE books. Elaborate gilt decoration. MAJOR FLAW: both upper hinges repaired. Ideal candidate for quality repair. Loose (opposed to tight) back binding so hinges repairable. Bound by a master though no binder ticket or turn in binder name. Gilt turn ins. AEG. Both FINE inside. Some plates (NOT text) with spot or two of foxing but no aging, marginalia, etc. Both tend to remain closed when stood on spines. Flaws (other than the hinges) very minor and mostly one type: scuffing. (1) All tips flat & square but scuffed. (2) Lower hinges scuffed. (3) Of the two book's 10 raised bands the very highest points of ONLY TWO are scuffed. Spine gilt quite elaborate and any scuffing at all would be very apparent. (4) "14.99" pencilled in both. (5) Vol 1 with full page pencilled gift inscription, 2nd ep with closed tear the width of the leaf. Kind of a puzzle. This set has obviously been opened a lot but, once opened, handled with great care. Happy to send more pix. NEAR FINE set, with a MAJOR FLAW. 1st ed, 8"x5.5", 387,439pp.

Hardcover. Dozen or so full page plates (illustrator). 1st edition. NEAR FINE book. FINE text. 1st edition. 10"x6". About 450pp. Raised ribs. Gilt title. Subject index at book's end. FINE text. Same marbling on boards, pastedowns and text block edges. No aging, foxing, marginalia, etc. Interesting membership. There were 60, including J. Pierpont Morgan, William Rockefeller (John's brother), Cornelius Vanderbilt and William K. Vanderbilt. Cornelius died in 1899 so there is much on him. The first text page's third paragraph opens with: "We are a much abused organization. We are said to be Fifth Avenue farmers: and it is said that all of our efforts are made in brown stone fronts and upon asphalt pavements." Over the eight year period there were 23 meetings. The summary of the proceedings of each range from 30 to 80 pages and are individually paginated. There are a dozen or so full page plates. Scans of two of these plates show the network of wires strung over the fields where the effects of electricity on plant growth was being investigated. This sectiion on electricity and plant growth is in the Jan 1900 proceedings. These were not frivolous experiments. This section recounts how in 1898 Sir William Crookes, head of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, wrote that the tremendous quantity of nitrogen in the atmosphere might be able to be extracted using the power of Niagare Falls, and thence made into fertiizer. NEAR FINE book. Original half brown morocco. Marbled boards.

Softcover. 1st edition. FINE catalog. Very early printing. "50 Cents" inside front cover. Those after, from Apr 1972 to 1974, were $1. Karabiner Climbing Museum website: the first catalog was Jan-Mar 1972 and priced at 50 cents. $1 was price after Mar 1972. In this first Jan-Mar period there were no changes but for a few hand done changes on the price list page. The price list page for the very first printing had no hand entered additions or changes. Soon (likely in late Jan or Feb 1972) was added a hand stamped price change, as in this copy. Price still 50 cents. FLAWLESS but: top front tip bumped, bottom tip rounded. Tight, including the stapled binding. Like new, in & out, including the order form and price list page. PROVENANCE: Catalog is this bookseller's personal copy bought in 1972. Address label is my (then) Takoma Park address. BACKGROUND: In mid '60s I started caving (I'm a 50+ year NSS member) and soon found I liked vertical caving. I yoyo'd most of West Virginia's pit caves; Schoolhouse, Hellhole, Cass, Sites, Elk Horn Mountain; but never graduated to the TAG country. Takoma Park borders DC. Much rope work practice was at the Potomac River cliffs at Carder Rock. All this got me interested in rock climbing, hence the Chouinard catalog. I never bought anything (hence the still bound in order form) as I found I much preferred caving. I left Takoma Park in late 1980s. Many websites list my connections back to Takoma Park. I understood and agreed with Chouinard's points. I've been a conservationist my whole life. As a kid I wanted to be a forest ranger and did spend two years in the College of Forestry at Syracuse U. FINE catalog. 1st edition. 11"x6 3/8". 66,(2),(4)pp.
