CONDITION : This is a previously owned book that remains clean and presentable, with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR -- Spine extremities display modest compression; there is a slight impact dent to the bottom extremity which extends a bit onto the rear cover; Covers are clean with but mild signs of handling; corner tips are not bumped; text-block edges are clean. (Bottom edge is mildly toned) My overall impression of the cover is that it is bright and crisp. BINDING -- Solid INTERIOR -- Clean and free of marking. No underlining, no marginalia, no signatures. DUST-JACKET -- Over all the outside of the jacket displays moderate wear, with the spine panel and joints displaying discoloration (or weathering). The rear panel has slightly more wear - displaying edge weathering and a couple of small stains. Back side of jacket is toned, else clean. The original 1963 price is still on the front cover (this price only used from 1962 - 1964) The whole is protected from further wear by a clear mylar sleeve.

Erasmo, umanista olandese, studiò teologia in Olanda e a Parigi (ottenendo il dottorato a Torino nel 1506). Discepolo ideale di Lorenzo Valla, entrò in contatto, in Inghilterra e… in Italia (dove passò tre anni, 1506-09), con i più eminenti umanisti del suo tempo e cominciò lo studio del greco. Si fece portavoce di una riforma della chiesa ispirata a idee di tolleranza e di pace universale. A Venezia, ospite di Aldo Manuzio, lavorò agli Adagia, una raccolta di proverbi dell'antichità. Tornato in Inghilterra, nella casa di Tommaso Moro scrisse il suo libro più noto, l'Elogio della follia (Encomion Moriae seu laus stultitiae, 1511), satira scintillante e bonaria che alla demenza del mondo, avido di cose effimere, contrappone la superiore «follia» che sostiene la fede del cristiano, lo spinge a perdonare i propri nemici e a donare i propri beni. Sostenitore di una riforma della chiesa, e della società, che si richiama alle origini del messaggio cristiano e ai grandi esempi umani dell'antichità, e che deve attuarsi per mezzo dell'educazione, E. è il più celebre degli umanisti cristiani del Cinquecento. Ottimo esemplare. Il prezzo del libro è comprensivo delle spese di confezionamento e spedizione mediante raccomandata tracciabile.

[His] first book, the Harmonice musices odhecaton A, was backed by Amadio Scotto and Niccolo di Raffaele, both experienced in the publishing trade. It does not survive intact and lacks a publication date, but the dedication (to Girolamo Donato, a leading Venetian nobleman, diplomat and humanist) is dated 15 May 1501. The music of this volume, a collection of chansons and other secular pieces, was edited by the Dominican friar Petrus Castellanus. The success of the venture must have been quickly evident: several reprintings of parts of it were needed within two years, and two new editions appeared, in 1503 and 1504. The intervening years were devoted to books of masses by the most highly regarded composers, starting with Josquin Des Prez and Brumel, as well as two motet volumes and the two books, Canti B and Canti C, which continued the Odhecaton series." Ma la salvezza è soprattutto quella della dignitas…homini e del suo valore. Anticipatore dei temi della Riforma, lontano da una disputa di natura religiosa, questa Opera è un grande contributo umanistico a una causa morale. «A differenza di Lutero - osserva nella Prefazione Sergio Quinzio - Erasmo, pur credendo nel Vangelo che insegna a vivere semplicemente obbedendo a Cristo, è un dotto che non rinuncia alla cultura. Forse la nota più profonda della coscienza erasmiana sta nella divisione fra la sua coscienza di dotto e la sua coscienza di cristiano: qui sta la sua modernità». Il concetto filosofico e teologico di libero arbitrio ha implicazioni in campo religioso, etico, scientifico e nel diritto. Lutero aveva fatto propria la teoria della predestinazione negando la capacità di scegliere liberamente, mentre Erasmo dice che il libero arbitrio non è stato distrutto completamente dal peccato originale e che, senza un minimo di libertà da parte dell'uomo, la giustizia e la misericordia divine diventano prive di significato.
