Cubiertas: leves roces. Interior: hojas ligeramente tostadas (amarillentas). USADO / GEBRAUCHT / USED. A very good copy.First separate edition of Giovanni Battista dell'Ottonaio carnival songs, edited with revisions and additions by the author's brother Paolo dell'Ottonaio, who also signs the dedication to Jacopo Salviati from Florence on 20 February 1559.Born in Florence in 1482, Giovanni Battista dell'Ottonaio, also known as Giovanni Battista Araldo, was educated at the prestigious company of St. John the Evangelist. This influenced the popular style and compositional techniques of his dramatic texts, which consistently draw on sacred drama and the well-established theatrical tradition of the Florentine companies. His production of carnival songs dating from the Republic era after Savonarola is substantial. Two stage texts, however, belong to the final period of his life: the farce titled Ingratitudine and the Commedia della nascita, vita e morte di S. Giovanni Battista. He died in 1527, likely as a result of an epidemic.Thirty-two years later, his carnival songs were published in the renowned collection edited by A.F. The edition did not satisfy Dell'Ottonaio's brother, Paolo, a canon of the Basilica of San Lorenzo, who demanded the immediate withdrawal of the work from sale. This resulted in a dispute between the two, exemplified on one side by Lasca's letter to Luca Martini, and on the other by the prelate brother's petition to Cosimo I. The dispute ended unfavorably for Lasca, who ultimately was forced to eliminate Dell'Ottonaio's songs from his collection and have pages 298-396 removed from all printed copies. The new corrected edition was finally published by Torrentino at Paolo's expense the following year, in 1560. This edition contains revisions and additions to some poems, and four entire new songs, two by Dell'Ottonaio, one by Sandro Preti, and one by Giuggiola (cf. I.
